Thanks y’all..

How long has it been? I have a stack of music sheets a foot deep of the all the songs we played, a disk drive full of recordings of shows we played.

Sometime life takes turns that no one expects, and this is one of them. I wish you all well, and maybe soon both of us will be playing again, but never together.

Thanks for all your support over the years. It has been a great pleasure to play for you all.

Video, RAIDs and Bandwidth – oh my

So I’ve been experimenting with video broadcasts since June now, and its been an interesting experience. It seems the “free” services like LiveStream and Justin (can’t speak for the others) are making it harder to get good results.

In June, the demand on the streaming server (an old iMac that I had which was idle) was able to handle things very nicely. As with all software upgrades, they swell up to take all processing power. I started with Wirecast 4.01 which is very easy to setup and get going, and it has worked great. I have 3 video sources that it is handling (2 webcams and 1 screen capture) I was sending audio via the Mac Pro which is running Logic Pro 9 (Agogee Ensemble is the converter) and a MOTU 8Pre to handle the mic inputs. I have 6 mic sources ( 2 mics on vocals, 2 mics on guitars and 2 mics in a Blumlein pair configuration to pickup the room and whirl’s squeeky chair) and one pedal board source. This is all mixed down into 2 stereo channels and sent over to the iMac. This has worked very well.

Wirecast 4.1 came out over the summer, I tried it, but the video results were not good, I was getting quite a lot of frame loss and had to go back to 4.01. This has since been fixed in 4.1.2, so I tried this configuration over the weekend.

The audio now falls out of sync, although when I was testing this. I did not see this problem initially. I understand Wirecast now uses VBR (variable bit rate) which could be the cause of this new issue. So I may have to once again return to 4.01 and wait until a patch comes out for this as well.

In the meantime I have been looking into ways to replace the webcams (I mean they do a decent job for the cost of them I couldn’t ask for better video – they are Logitech C615′s and have a camera mount on the bottom of them (the C910s do not). There are several problems with webcams. First, they have a wide camera angle and it is not possible to change this. Second, on the Mac Logitech got lazy and has never released a driver and supporting software which will allow you to control the camera, so it will blow out the whites in studio lights.

So I have been over to http://www.aja.com picking up two pieces of free software, one is called AJA DataCalc and the other is AJA System Test. The former will tell you who much throughput you need to drive an HD video / audio stream, the later will actually measure the performance of the system, and has options to tell you the disk read/write speed, frame rate your machine will support and the maximum number of video streams your machine can support.

I will need to have 2 HD video sources in order to pull off the next round of “upgrades” to the system, and to do that and record without frames dropping, I have to move up to a RAID in order to get the 55 MB/sec this will require (per video stream). And that is to support recording a 720p @ 30 fps. This is close to the performance of current WD Cavier Black, but there is headroom needed, and if I decide to add more video sources, then I need a design that will support that as well.

More on the RAID design next time…

Busy Weekend

bwlogo

I setup a Reverbnation account sometime ago, but didn’t bother to fill out all the details, and I also had created a Live Stream channel some time ago as well (WBBB), but never bothered to set it up either…I did do some early testing, but over the weekend, Doc Shackleton setup a Live Stream which we were able to bring into Second Life from Tom’s Burned Down Cafe on Madeline Island, WI. So, I decided to get busy and get all of this stuff setup and tested. We will be performing some tests over the next week or so as time permits to get the Live Stream working and make it available to you here.

Thank so much Seabreeze and Pajoel for letting us play there its alot of fun listening to all the great artists you have lined up for Weds. It all starts at 6:30 PM SL so dont miss out, come out this Weds you’re gonna love it.

Blindboink Paraham and Ziffy Zarf

Cosmic Haystack

Friday we were supposed to play in Cair Paravel, but the I had a special meeting to attend so we did not play that evening

Saturday we played at the Cookie Farm, We have been working up Elizabeth Cotton’s Freight Train. I am playing it “Cotton Picking Style”
which I can do by myself, but its quite a different thing to perform. So we attempted it for the 2nd time. I think we will get it eventually :D

Sunday, I went around to various venues to listen to music. I spoke to a number of owners during the show, Meet Sienna Magic, Cancer Piers who both wanted us to play.

Whirl and I will be performing at the One Fine Day venue every Thursday evening at 7:00 PM. They have a lot of cool shops there so check’em out.

I put Whirl into a panic on Sunday when she got up from her Sunday nap she found that the Piers Paradise folks wanted us to play in an hour….After calming her down we played for them and will be appearing there a couple of Sundays in February (7th and 21st) at 3 PM SL.

p.s. No I was NOT awake. Hee. I don’t have any pics of us from Good Vibes or anyone else either, for that matter. My bad.  bart, remind me to take some more pics of blind and ziffy, only have a couple so I’m recycling pic here. As much time as we spend listening to those two nuts we should have more pics :)

Saturday at Ladonna and Cookie farm

Live @ BurningLife

October 18th we played at Ladonna March’s Burning Life Stage a giant table with all kinds of goodies on it. Really nicely done. Whirl and I had revamped our lineup of songs. We spent the morning at the Arlington guitar show in RL. Whirl finally picked up her Republic “Highway 61″ resonator. These are not available yet on Republic’s website, but somehow she managed to get one.

Tricone is the Beastie, Hwy 61 is the Brat!

Tricone is the Beastie, Hwy 61 is the Brat!

So in addition to an all new song lineup she got a chance to play the new beastie. (Edit added by whirl: here is the guitar. Isn’t it pwetty? It’s little but it’s LOUD and sounds great, easy to play, Frank outdid himself on this one…I LOVE IT.  I have serial #00007 so bart is calling it the secret agent guitar :) Go to Republic Guitars and pester Frank!)

We sure had fun playing for Ladonna’s friends and breaking in whirls guitar was a hoot too.

We also played the Cookie Farm on Saturday to small turn out but we all had fun never the less.

Lots of our old friends were there which is always the best part about playing in SL. Oh and the parking is free too.

October 10th – Hobo Reunion

Whirl and I played twice on Saturday Oct 10th. We played Guthries at noon SL time. It is always so much fun to play Guthries and we appreciate Dottie Iceberg for all she does to help us “beginners”.

There was a Hobo Reunion concert planned by Derek S. (now known as the Producer) which had originally been planned to be held at the original Hobo Info hub in Calleta, but its always so difficult to find a Linden on so short a notice to try and get the stream changed and 3 different groups playing that would have meant we would have needed one for the duration of the event. So it was moved to Cair Paravel.

The other reason for the event was to celebrate Inga Wind’s 3rd rezday in SecondLife. She has been a very good friend to Whirl and I through the years and is good to celebrate all those days and fun we have had together.

Peet Peterman played at 1:00 PM, he played a bunch of folk songs and some in Dutch, and although I do not speak Dutch it was fun to listen to anyway. He drew quite a crowd for this event and many hobos who I have not seen is so long showed up. Thanks Peet for your help in making this event a success.

Whirl and I played at 2:00 PM, we have been playing our A-list of songs for the past couple of weeks and had planned to create a new list, but Whirl was so sick on Saturday it was probably enough to just play what we knew pretty well.

Groucho March was scheduled to play at 3:00 PM but he had to cancel, So we attempted to play for another 30 minutes but finally had to surrender to our dog Gretchen who would not stop barking (it was her dinner time you see).

Peet Peterman took the stage again and played for another 45 minutes. Did I mention he is awesome? Well he is.

That’s it for this week. Hope to see you next time we play on Saturday Oct 17th at the Cookie Farm 7:00 PM SL.

Until then, have a great week!
