Whirl played drums professionally for about 10 years, retired for awhile, then rekindled her interest to play again when she heard R.L. Burnside, Elmore James, Johnny Winter and all the other great blues players. She began learning banjo a couple of years ago with Bart and recently began to learn bottleneck slide guitar.
Bart was born into a musical family and was encouraged at a very early age to study music. Bart’s Mom, brother and sister played piano, when an aging great aunt gave our family a beautiful Steinway piano. Bart was offered lessons on it, but declined because it would have meant giving up baseball practice. So Bart at 7 years old, took up the cornet (a very old one), and played all through college. Bart also plays tuba and it is rumored that he has a C flute in a closet somewhere.
In 2007 ago Bart turned off his TV and began learning Banjo and Guitar. He kept disappearing from SL and friends to sneak off and go practice guitar, soon his friends (Nolan, Inga, Titter, Beez…you know who you are!) began asking him to play for them. Bart continues to learn, and loves to share some of the old story telling songs which have been long forgotten.
Inevitably, Whirl who has been playing guitar for many years, began playing with Bart, and together they played for a few friends in SL. The “few friends” soon expanded to a whole bunch of friends and they began taking bookings.
